Friday - half day

I always make Fridays super light.  Mon-Wed are tough days where we accomplish a lot.  Thursday is light-average, and Friday is super light, or we don't even do school.

So, first thing this morning, we did an awesome art project via skype with Mamaw.  She asked me to buy a canvas, glue crayons on it, and collect silk flowers.  Here's step one:

Then this morning, we started with the hair dryer:

It took a while to get it going, but the results were fantastic!

It's coming along....

Mamaw was with us!

Afterwards, we glued the white silk flowers on.  Crayons are the garden gate, melted wax is weeds, flower stems, and flowers on the top!  Viola!  I just think it is so beautiful.

After our project, we did Bible class, then went to lunch with my mom, where Kara could play in the play area.  Then we came back to take a phonics test (which she got 100% on), a spelling test (she missed 3 and cried - they were really hard words!  I think she did great), and we did some math.  We learned gallon, quart, pint, and cup measurements.  I saw this "gallon man" on pinterest and decided to remember it for later.  This was the best thing Kara could have ever done.  She thought it was a BLAST.  We made a gallon body.  Then we measured another gallon and divided it in 4s because 4 quarts equals a gallon (those are the arms and legs).  Next, we measured a quart and divided it in half because 2 pints equals a quart (those are the shoes).  Then, we measured a pint and divided it in half because 2 cups equals a pint (those are the hands).  Finally, we made a happy face for our gallon man.  We taped Kara's together and hung it up, but I left mine in pieces so Kara could use them to measure.

Much better than the boring old workbook!

Here's Kara's.

Fortunately, Kara's brain is insane when it comes to math, so she can quickly calculate 3 gallons equals 12 quarts.  How is she only 6???

So, we are done in just about an hour and a half, and it was a great day.  We are neck-and-neck with public school....except we're in second grade.....and they're just doing lots of arts and crafts and Christmas songs and we're still doing regular days.  Oh well.  :-)
