Day 3, California Trip

Day 3
This was our last day in the city, so we made the most of it, seeing the last sites on our list. Scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast at the hotel first, then we headed out to ride the cable cars! What a great way to see the city! I'm not a city girl, so shopping in all those shops doesn't appeal to me (especially since we have all of those right here), and all the traffic and bums isn't so lovely when I have Kara in tow. So, cable cars! They have a really interesting story, and the short version is back in the 1800s the fog made the brick streets too slippery for the horses and buggies to go up those steep hills, so one man (forgot his name) invented cable cars, which are pulled on a cable. They are still like that now - no electricity, just a cable and a hand break for the conductor. So cool!

Here's my Mom and Kara on the cable car.

Up, up, up the steep hills of San Francisco.

Down, down, down the steep hills of San Francisco.

One of the stops on the cable car route is Lombard street. It is the crookedest street in the world. I couldn't get a picture of it from the bottom (since it's the middle of the road in the city), but here are a few pictures of us going up and down the stairs on either side of the crooked street. There were amazing flowers on either side of the street - it was so beautiful.

With all those flowers, there were a few little bugs and Kara found a rolly polly. She brought it with her on the cable car and played with it while we saw the city. :-)

After the cable cars, we decided to go have lunch. You can't go to San Francisco without having soup in a sourdough bread bowl, so that's what we did. We ate at Boudin, which is a famous bakery.
I'm not sure if you can see or not, but the bakery was on one side of the building, and the restaurant was on the other side. There were wire baskets going back and forth across the top of the building bringing fresh bread from the bakery over to the restaurant. Talk about fresh bread! :-)

After that, it was nap time. Then dinner at a yummy Italian restaurant right on Jefferson Street. Kara wanted to go back to see the sea lions and ride the merry-go-round again, so my mom took her while I shopped for souvenirs and ate cold stone ice cream by myself. :-)

When they got back, they played with jewelry like they always do and played go fish.

The next day we would be leaving the city. We did everything we wanted to and more! San Francisco was a great city. :-)
